2nd - 3rd January New Year winter Warm-Up at Bolton Steam Museum
Bolton
Our volunteers have rescued and restored over 25 old stationary steam engines - some of the engines which once drove the cotton mills and woollen mills of the North of England. Most will be running in steam on these 2 days. Our collection includes 2 rare beam engines (the oldest is around 170 years old.) We have just resuced another very old and unusual engine from the scrapman. After lying in a field in yorkshire for 30 years, our volunteers are busy restoring it to working order. Come and see how we are getting on! We are open from 10.00am to 4.00pm, and admission is free!

3rd January New Year Bank Holiday 2011
8th January

Polar - Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

Performances at 2.30pm and 7.30pm

Tickets £15, £20, £26, £39

Polar is a journey to the magical frozen lands and seas at the ends of the earth. Come with us to experience the great ice fields and icebergs north and south of the 66th parallel in this world premiere of music and film.

See the white blizzards, dazzling blue oceans and vast wilderness of the South, watch the mighty polar bear, the haunting beluga whales and beautiful humpback whales in the company of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, a specially arranged score and an immense screen.

Scientists say the Arctic is changing more rapidly and acutely than anywhere on the planet; 2007 witnessed the lowest sea ice coverage in recorded history. Jacques Cousteau said that it’s easier to protect what we love. This is an event that will make you love these increasingly fragile places.

Family films - Not all films are on everyday so check with cinema for availability and times:

Kidsguide tip
Some cinemas such offer very cheap deals for kids' films on weekend mornings. Some even let adults go free. Usually the film is one that has left the main screens so this is also a good way to catch up on any film you missed.
