of your library?

Libraries today are a great resource for families - not just offering books but also CDs, DVDs, computer games, free internet access and special sessions for children.  They can also lend materials for children with hearing, visual, physical or learning problems and dyslexia.

Did you know that libraries in many areas now allow you to search their catalogue, reserve and renew books online?

Storytime and Rhymetime

Most libraries hold regular storytime or rhymetime sessions for the under 5s. You can usually just turn up which is very handy if you are trying to fit it in round naptimes etc. Most sessions last about half an hour during which children listen to stories, ask questions, join in rhymes etc. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bookstart BookCrawl
The Bookstart Book Crawl is for children aged 0-4 years. Children can start as soon as they become members of the library.  They are given a collector's card on which they can collect a sticker each time they visit the library to borrow books.  When they have collected 5 stickers they will be awarded a beautifully illustrated certificate, there are 5 different certificates to collect.

Bookstart packs

Bookstart is a national scheme to instil a love of books by giving good quality bookpacks to all babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers. See your health visitor or local library for details. www.bookstart.co.uk

Audio books and DVDs
For a small charge, you can rent audio books (tape or CD) with as well as popular children’s DVDs and videos.

Libraries for older kids
& teenagers

Homework clubs & reading groups

Some libraries hold regular reading groups and homework clubs. These can include free use of computers for homework use, help finding books and free reservation of books for homework.

Multimedia
Libraries rent out a range of CDs, DVDs and games including  Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, PS2, Xbox and PC CD-ROM.

Summer reading schemes

Most libraries hold themed summer reading schemes, encouraging children to read with various activities, stickers and a certificate or medal for kids who complete the challenge.

Some libraries also hold special activity or craft sessions during school holidays.

For details of your local library story times, homework clubs etc see Kidsguide’s libraries section.
